Why didn’t some of my mussels not open during (or after) cooking?

All Pier 33 Gourmet mussels are completely safe to eat even if they don’t open when thawed and cooked.

All Pier 33 Gourmet mussels are rope cultured in the cold pristine waters of the Chilean Patagonia. After harvest, they are immediately fully cooked, vacuum packed, and flash frozen.

The common recommendation to not eat unopened mussels has its roots in the history of wild mussels and applies only to live fresh mussels, as these can pose a health risk.

Due to the high pressure of the vacuum pack, it may take some shells a little longer to open and some may not open at all, however, they can be pried open with a spoon or another shell and will not pose any health risk to you.
